Comments:	Hi Rab, Just browsing your great site again and can see so much has been added. We left Catrine in 1960.I am doing a family tree for our wee Grandson and have discovered that my Great Grandfather on Mum\92s side came to Catrine from Northampton--don't quite know why. They owned a shoe factory in Northampton, They live don St Cuthbert's Street until Mum and Dad married and then moved to Shawlands Street. My Grandmother was Elsie Langley. I remember that our neighbours were the Stirling\92s, Mary Marion and a brother whom I can't remember the name of. My parents fostered Marion when their parents died until Mary came back from India. Then it was the Elliot\92s, Peggy and Brusher and their family. It would be good to know if anyone is still there. Can I thank you for all your work on the site; you have given so much information to so many people. I hope you keep up the good work. It is very interesting.

Still have family in the village. namely Parkers and Gardiners, left in early seventies to Netherthird until 1987, been in Bolton since up to last year when we moved to Stoneclough by Radcliffe, Manchester, hope all is well in coturn and do drop me an email anyone who remembers me. Comments:	My great, great grandfather, Hugh Reid Seaton was a draper in Catrine. I believe his wife; Margaret was involved in the business Seaton and Co. Hugh Reid Seaton died in 1873.

Comments:	Just found an old death certificate that says that my great, great, great grandmother was born in Catrine Dec 24, 1825 and came over to America in the 1840s or so with her brother. Their name was McGill. I think Thomas and Janet were the parents of Thomas and Janet that went to the US. She and Thomas moved to Washington, D.C. and married there.

Comments:	Hello. I'm very interested in Catrine, Ayrshire as my ancestors came over here from there in the late 1800's. Our name was Macklem but we have recently learned that their last name was Mecklam. WE understand the family were tailors at one time. My great, great grandfather had married a Kerr also from there. I hope to visit Catrine in 2013 when I make it to Scotland for the Edinburgh Marathon in May. I can't wait to see the country my ancestors hailed from. I hope I might be able to meet you when I visit!

Comments:	Hi Rab This is the first time I have really looked up my old home town, I was born in 1956 and lived on Shawlands St. Till we moved to where I am now in 1960 (Dad got a job in the pits) although my big Sister has visited a few times, I must say you have a great site and it is really good to look at where I came from although I don't have too many memories of Catrine I remember I really enjoyed my first 4 years of life there! I don't remember many people up there but I am sure Hugh Brown lived over the road (we lived next door to Brusher & Peggy Elliot)It would be good to hear from anyone who was around there at that time. Comments:	Just found your web site, excellent. I lived at 23 St Cuthbert Street known locally as The Castle. I went to Catrine school when the dominie was Mr Thompson. Deputy was Mr Smith, Kate Begg was the headmistress of the infant school at the end of Newton Terrace. I also recognised the Janitor Tam Elliot. I started work on leaving school as a garden boy at Daldorch when it was owned by Mr Campbell. John Craig was the head gardener. I was then an apprentice tenter in the mill for three years before joining the Royal Navy. I served in the Royal Navy for 34 years retiring with the rank of commander. My father was born in Wood Street 1875, died 1964.His name was George (Geordie) I have a photograph of him playing in the Catrine band. The leader of the band was Charlie Parker. He preferred to call it Catrine Orchestra. The photograph was taken by the bridge at the and of Newton Terrace circa 1905. There maybe some of your readers will remember some of my chums, Bert Robertson, Willie Mackay, Hugh (shugie) Moorhead to name a few. Thank you for a nostalgic website. Alex

Comments:	Hello again, I have just been going through some old papers of my Mum's and have found Gran's death certificate. She is buried in Catrine Cemetery and apparently we own that plot of land in perpetuity, so who knows maybe I'll return home at the end of my days. They used to live on St Cuthbert Street and moved to Shawlands Street in the early 50's. Having visited last year I was so sorry to see the state of the old place. I have two older brothers ,Geoff and Ian, a sister May younger than me she is on one of the 1957 school photos, and a younger brother, Jim who was only a bairn when we left for England. I did 1 year at Cumnock Academy, so many lovely memories. Keep up the good work Rab.

Comments:	Hi Rab .Thanks for the time and effort you put into this site .I have just read through your guestbook and enjoyed some of my own memories as well as those of some of your other guests.It is nice to know that i have become part of that history, I am the waif in the 1955 school photy, I actually have that very print. I came up last summer /09 got a coffee from Peter Duncan ? and walked up thru' the Voe's and on up the water looking for "the boys hole " and "the wheel" don't know yet whether i found them. This would be Geordie Meikle the painter whose daughter Jessie married a John Kiltie and lived up the scheme. The family used to live in the big house at the entrance to the station.

Comments:	Had another look at your site, Rab, after having read it a long time ago. It is great to see and hear of folks and things from times past. I am now 69 and am in contact with Inglis Thomson, Wm Harvey, Douglas Hood from Catrine days. I would love to hear anything about more of my old school friends, Jean McCluckie, Betty Buchanan, Jean Oliphant, Roger (Spiv) Niven, Bruce Moncur or any oldies who remember me. I left Catrine old school in 1954 going to Cumnock Academy then in 1959 went to London to try and civilize the English. Now living in USA where all my three sons live, with their wives and children. My eldest son, Ian had just been diagnosed with Cancer on his spleen also Leukemia, so I am kept busy running him to hospital in Salt lake City twice a week. I am very interested in Family History and have helped many people all over the world trace their ancestors free of charge. I am happy to help anyone trace their Scottish ancestors, having got back to 1598 with my family. Through helping others I have actually found nine of my own living relatives that I did not know about before.Its more addictive than heroin and more fun.

Comments:	Hi Rab....my name is Brian...I am 73 yrs old..was born at Seafield hospital Ayr..02/08/36...My late father FRED was manager at Catrine cotton mills...he was the one who saw the new stuff put into new mill...sadly I was sent to boarding school at 7 years of age---horrid place.-named GRESHAM HOUSE-- firstly at Dean Castle Kilmarnock then TREARNE HOUSE BEITH...our house was named ROSEBANK in riverside cottages second last..phone was catrine 238..my dad had wee Hillman minx reg AHS807.. The Mitchells who ran Bazzar shop were neighbours and last house had a lovely lady I knew as Miss Reid..hope these few memories help Rab..ps I lost my mum on 18/021940..she was only 33.I still miss her.. was sent to grandparents then in Manchester..on Xmas eve that year Germans bombed that city...very scary for a wee boy. sincerely B Grundy

Comments:	My husband is traveling to Catrine the week of May 9th, and will be doing some family research for me. How can I contact the parish church to be able to see the interior and any records? My grandmother, Mary Lennox Draffan, immigrated to the US with her parents at the turn of the century. She was baptized in the church, her parents were married there and her grandparents (my great greats) I believe are buried in the church cemetery. My family names are Draffan, Lenox and Campbell...anyone left in town by those names? Any info you can pass along is very much appreciated!

Love seeing the auld photos, especially the one of the school janitor - he was always picking on me, and I was such a well-behaved girl at school!!! Play truant these days and you're likely to be stop-checked and searched by the police. Pinch apples and you've got a police record for life! They were James Gemmill and Jean Hutchison and they had six children: Jennett bpt 1774 New Cumnock; Christina bpt 1776 Dundonald, m. William Hendrie, lived Gateside, Ayr; Mary bpt 1779 Dundonald; Hugh bpt 1782 Mauchline m. Eleanor Bowland, went to Co. Wicklow, Ireland; Robert bpt 1785, Mauchline, was a clothlapper in Glasgow by 1806; Peter bpt 1879 Catrine, served in the Royal Artillery until 1822, discharged at Woolwich; John bpt 1795 Catrine, went to Lanark Co., Upper Canada in 1821. Comments:	Fascinating to read so much here. My McLintock ancestors (Adam McLintock, shoemaker, married locally born Jean Scot) were here between 1790 and 1820s. Some went from the Catrine Mill to Stanley in Perthshire, and thence to Glasgow. My Currie ancestor, Adam Currie and wife Anabella Wilson lived across the river at Townhead of Catrine as a farm servant in the early 1800s. The families were linked by marriage two generations later, in Glasgow in 1891! If anyone locally has links to these families I should be delighted to know.

We walked around Catrine and oh my-they say you should never go back! We have been back before but it was a few years ago while my parents were alive and Catrine has changed so much!!I used to live on Shawlands Street(next door to Brusher Elliott)What has happened to it? My grandfather was William Coyle, owner of the Snug Bar in Ayr and Cumnock. Meg was his daughter and the Snug in Cumnock was run by his daughter Isa with her husband Harry. Comments:	Hi there, Just happened on your site in my search for my Waddell ancestor. I don't know if you can help, but maybe worth a try. My great-grandfather James Waddell was a dispatch rider in the Scots Guards when in London he met his wife, Margaret Brady, who was a Catholic, born in Dublin. James was Presbyterian, and his family in Ayrshire disowned him. I don't know where they were married, (or if) as I can't find any record. All their children were born in Dublin, the eldest about early 1880. James died in Dublin in 1891 aged 36. That puts his birth date about 1855. I have no way of knowing who the parents of James were, and I am hoping that I might find a Waddell family who had a James who "disappeared" about 1879-80. I have been searching for a long time, and would be so excited if I found such a family.

Comments:	It's taken me 58 years but I'm coming up to Catrine next week to see where my grandfather, David Muir Hogg, was born around 1894. His father John McKinzie Hogg, a pit joiner, lived in Stewart Place, which I believe is no more, with mother Jessie (nee Muir) and 6 brothers and sisters. His sister Barbara was a dressmaker, sister Jessie a cotton spinner and brother William a miner's drawer. The others were Joseph Gilbert, Maggie and Robert. Thanks for the photographs!

I was last in Catrine in October 2006 and have seen many changes over the years. My brother and I went to Catrine School and most people living in Catrine in the 50s 60s and 70s will probably remember my Gran - Wee Sarah - who lived in Bridge Lane and always seemed to have visitors in. My Dad (John Ross) was Catrine born and bred but sadly died in June 2006; my Mum is from Mauchline and lives near me in Oxfordshire. I'd like to hear from anyone who remembers us.

Comments:	Hi Rob, Well what a surprise as you know I often pop in to have a wee nosy and it seems so do others, I have just had an email from my dearest school friend (when we were at Catrine Primary, 1953-59) Netta McIlvaney, she moved to Canada and I moved to England and we lost touch and thanks to you and your web site we have found each other again. Thanks Rob. I love to read all the news and enjoyed the videos, I well remember a whole lot of families picnicking together by the river, and how we all learned to swim in it. Alas I also remember my brothers went swimming around 1957-8 and their pal drowned up the water. Most of my memories are good ones though. My Granny used to live on Cuthbert Street and then she lived with us on Shawlands Street, number 33 right next door to "Brusher" Elliot, I brought my parents back to see Margaret Elliot when she lived at 31. We saw a few changes then, I used to tell my husband about the salmon leaping up the waterfalls and when we got there the falls was dry---- change! Thanks again Rob and keep up the good work.

There was no sign of any bits of the bridges; they couldn't have been very substantial in the first place. River was impossible to cross. Comments:	I have a lot of photos taken in Ayrshire around the turn of the century. One is by R Duncan of Catrine. A group of around 45 children gathered together with a large sign saying GOODBYE. My Grandparents came from Glengarnoch and Saltcoats. Grandfather worked at Sorn Castle before WW1 then for a short time after. Could have been taken at Sorn. Comments:	Like S. Baker I was in Catrine with Teen Missions but one year later, '79! I remember the Ayr river and how clear it was. Also fish and chips at a local shop. We had a big walled garden behind the stables where we were sleeping, and in the garden a gooseberry bush. We don't have gooseberries in the States and I would go out every day, by myself and eat handfuls of these delicious, novelty gooseberries. One day the cook said, "I was planning to bake a gooseberry pie but there are no gooseberries left on the bush! Someone ate them all!" I didn't say a word!! I also remember not being able to understand the people speaking-- The first time I asked someone a question I thought they said, "I don't care!" I thought it was so rude. Finally I realized they were saying, "I dinna ken!" When I got back to the States it took me ages to stop saying "aye" instead of "yes"... I really loved Scotland and especially Ayrshire and Catrine!

I have recently started to trace my family tree on my father\92s side and have my Grandfathers wedding certificate giving my Great Grandfathers name and occupation. Comments:	I am confused by the "100 years ago" book. I gather it was published in 1903. But does the 100 years ago refer to a hundred years ago from now or are the contents a reprint of a guide published in 1803?? My interest is that I am trying to trace info on a woman called Mary Meikle (nee Picken) who was married to William, a farmer at Temple house. However, in Slater\92s trade directory for 1882 and in her will she is down as being a painter and glazier. Clearly these would have been unusual occupations for woman then, as now. This is part of a larger project I am doing on the history of women in the building industry in Scotland. As she would be an early example, I would be delighted if you could point me towards any known living relatives. I am assuming that the advert for Meikle's painters in the guide were her son/s (if it refers to a firm working in 1903) but conceivably there may still be Meikle's around who have connections. Any help acknowledged in published papers etc. of course.

Comments:	Thought I would add to my original entry. I lived in Catrine from five years old. I also lived at No19 St. Cuthbert\92s St for a short time. After I left school, I worked in Kilmarnock for about four years, then I had a short spell at Dales Nursery in Mauchline until I was called up for Nationl Service in 1946.When I was demobbed in 1948, I worked for J.C.REID the local builders, and helped to knock down the building that housed the Big Wheel also the old mill and erect the new building. I stayed with the firm until I Renlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1951, and eventually completing 22yrs service, as an Engine Fitter. During my years in the RAF.I married and left the RAF.in 1971 and settled in Luton where I worked for Monarch Airlines and Britannia Airways till I retired in 1989.

The new info I have from your site is that the Slimans were not there in ab 1800 so must have moved in soon after as James Sliman was born in Catrine in 1805 and died there in 1877 - by which time most of the family had moved elsewhere. They were in the weaving trade.

Comments:	I was brought up in Catrine. My father was Wullie Stevenson the builder, who may be remembered by some older residents. He was building maintainance man at the bleachworks and liver in Newton Street. I left Catrine in 1959 and was a police officer in London for 26 years until I retired in 1986.Now living in Utah. I have three sons who all live over in USA, all married. Will visit the site again when I have more time to browse. Comments:	I was born in Irvine but my family were from Catrine. We moved to England when I was 5 years old. I returned to Catrine periodically. I have not been back there now for 25 years as I now live in the USA. I have fond memories of the river Ayr, the distant peaks of black ceden (don\92t know if that is the correct spelling?)Jacobs ladder leading up to Ballochmyle. Love your pictures some seem familiar. My family lived on Montgomery St. surnames Raffertys and McConnachies. You spelled it like we all say it, Black ceden. I only realised quite late in life from reading a local map, the hill is well named as Black side end. Every time I look at it from the top of the Howford road turning back towards Catrine, I see it different. But unfortunately as we all know with our local weather being generally pretty shitty, we are usually looking at the black side of the hill. It\92s always beautiful to look at but I\92m glad I don\92t have to live up there in the winter. OK for sheep. Or for a summer walk on the odd dry day when the wind\92s not howling.
