Thanks for this website. I am researching my maternal grandmother's family, the McCarlie's of Catrine. Her dad was Andrew M. McCarlie. It is nice to see where my grandmother grew up in the early 1900's.

A great grandmother named Marion Scott (Steven) born nov 9 1881? married to John Scott in catrine Jan 8 1904. Mother shredded photos and our past. I have nothing, no photos of grandparents , great grandparents, only one photo was left and that is of this Marion Scott . I would like to know who John Scott was , a birth possible of 1882. They went on to have children named tom, agnes and flora Scott. Flora then became Gilmour and then later on Knox. She apparently died in 1975 I never met her..She is my grandmother, never saw a photo of her either. Oh and Marion dad was George Steven and her Mum was Helen and her dad died in Catrine 1910 April 10.Ive spend hundreds just on death certificates and credits and all the rest of it.One day I will come home and I can go to the libraries and register and see for myself. Any familiar names here? any help at all. Please don't hesitate . Thankyou gwen.johnson@cogeco.ca :o

The Smithy referred to by Robin Stevenson in Wood Street was a great wee man. We used to go there to get 'special' nails (horse shoe nails)to bore holes in chestnuts, so that we could play 'conkers'. Health and safety' have tried to restrict playing conkers and some schools have banned the game. Changed days!

Hi there Rab,I was interested to see your entry for Alex Kidd the blacksmith. Was there a second blacksmith shop in Catrine? They one I remember when I was wee was in Wood Street, just round the corner from Joe Mutti's chip shop;I used to watch the smithy work there in the mid 1940s.I have just joined facebook and found some old school friends and some good new friends in the village.I left there in 1959 to work in London as a polisman.I have been retired now for 26 years.
